Arya Vaidyan N. Rama Varier, popularly known as Dr. Varier, started an ayurvedic centre in Madurai, with a very modest capital of Rs 100. A clinic was set up in a rented place, which doubled up as his residence and medicines for his practice were also prepared there under his directions, by his wife. This was how AVN (Arya Vaidya Nilayam) took it’s roots in Madurai. His treatment was so effective that over a period of time he became a very popular physician in this part of the country. His abundant knowledge of Ayurveda, compassion towards patients and commitment to provide the best possible solutions, were the cornerstones on which he established his practice.Dr.Rama Varier’s only daughter got married to Arya Vaidyan P.V. Raghava Varier, who took over the operations of AVN in the year 1963 before which he was in New Delhi, and was the honorary physician to the then President of India Dr.S.Radhakrishnan. He is currently the chairman of the group and has been leading it to its current state of success.
There has been a marked improvement in the awareness and demand for Ayurveda, worldwide. In the global perspective, there has been a dramatic growth in the awareness of yoga and it’s practice. People who practice yoga naturally tend to use Ayurveda for their healthcare needs. So the spread of yoga has been helpful in taking Ayurveda globally. There is also a fear in the minds of people about the potential side-effects of synthetic medicine and a shift towards natural products and hence people are turning towards Ayurveda in larger numbers. The holistic nature of Ayurveda is also a major attraction globally.
